I just started If I Stay by Gayle Forman. Here is some background information about the book. So far the setting is Portland and it snowed about an inch which is enough for a snow day. Mia is the main character. Her whole family is musical, she plays the cello and is hopefully going to Julliard. Mia, her brother Teddy, dad and mom are all off from school/work, so they decide to go visit their friends Henry and Willow. They are driving and the windows keep fogging up and then they crash horribly. "The impact of the four ton pickup truck going sixty miles an hour plowing straight into the passenger side had the force of an atom bomb."(page 15)
After the crash Mia was perfectly fine, so she thought. Mia started looking for her family, first she saw her dad, little chunks of his brain were everywhere (eww). Then she saw her mom she had no blood, no anything she looked fine besides her face was white and lips were blue. She couldn't find Teddy anywhere, she thought she spotted him. She realized it's not Teddy, it's her, she doesn't know if she is dead or alive. Emergency workers came to the scene seconds later, she saw them wrap her mom and dad in plastic, but when they came to her they knew she wasn't quite dead yet. They were twenty minutes from the hospital and usually a person in her condition could only survive for ten minutes, but they were going to try their best to keep her alive. This is as far as I've read so far. I'm absolutely hooked so far and I'm curious to see if she will stay alive or die.

Love & Haight
Love & Haight is set in San Francisco in the 70's, the "hay day" for hippies and protesting just about anything. The main character is Chloe a 17 year old girl , her reason for being in San Francisco was to get an abortion. San Francisco and Mexico were the only places it was legal to get an abortion. Chloe goes to San Francisco with an open mind not knowing what will happen and is looking for an adventure. Throughout the book the main characters are Chloe, her best friend MJ, and her crazy aunt KiKi.
Overall, I would give Love & Haight a 3/5 stars. It was an interesting book, but just average. Susan Carlton did a fabulous job on using good diction and making you want to keep reading. I didn't enjoy the topic, but I felt like she did a good job describing it. The book lacked having much of a climax and you always knew what was coming.Susan Carlton's Home Page
